A Stitch in Time Saves Nine: How Accurate Diagnosis Transforms Lives

Every day at Amazing Grace Biomedical Laboratory, I am reminded of the life-changing power of accurate diagnosis. People come through our doors with uncertainties, concerns, and even despair, and it’s truly fulfilling to see how the right tests and expert advice can bring clarity, hope, and healing. Let me share some stories that highlight why proper laboratory investigations should always be your first step.

One day, a lady came in requesting an abdominal scan. I asked her if she had prepared for the procedure or had a doctor’s referral, and she said no. When I asked about her symptoms, she described lower abdominal pain and a burning sensation when urinating. It was clear to me that she didn’t need an abdominal scan but rather a laboratory investigation for a urinary tract infection (UTI). I advised her to provide a midstream urine sample for testing, leaving the rest to us as laboratory professionals. Within a short time, we identified the issue, and she received the right treatment.

This happens more often than you’d think. Many people misdiagnose themselves, turning to over-the-counter remedies or local herbs, hoping for relief. Ignorance and fear lead to avoidable stress and complications. Did you know that untreated infections can cause missed periods, dark menstrual blood, waist pain, and even infertility? Imagine how much pain and confusion could be avoided if people prioritized proper laboratory tests over guesswork.

Another memorable case involved a man who came to us complaining of fatigue, blurred vision, persistent thirst, and frequent urination. He had visited another facility and been given IV drips without any diagnostic tests. I asked him what kind of drip he was given, but he didn’t know. When I suggested we check his blood sugar levels, he agreed. To his shock, his blood sugar was dangerously high. He was living with undiagnosed diabetes, and the earlier intervention could have saved him weeks, months, or even years of struggle. Then there’s the inspiring story of a woman who had been trying for five years to have another child after having two. She had been told she had secondary infertility due to blocked tubes and was even advised to undergo an evacuation. When she came to me, I asked a simple question: “Is there any leftover tissue in your womb that would require an evacuation?” She couldn’t answer. Instead of invasive procedures, we started with a series of infection tests, including urine microscopy/culture/sensitivity (M/C/S) and high vaginal swab (HVS) tests. Her menses were restored, and soon after, she conceived again. Today, she is a proud mother of six!

There are also silent conditions like Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that causes peptic ulcers. Patients often come in complaining of chest pain or back pain that worsens with stress. Many immediately think they need a chest X-ray, but a simple H. pylori test could be the answer. With proper diagnosis and treatment, they avoid unnecessary procedures and find relief.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Too many people avoid medical tests because they fear the results, but that fear can cost you your life. I remember visiting a senior friend of mine who seemed healthy but agreed to a free kidney function test. To our surprise, his creatinine levels were high. Further investigation revealed an enlarged prostate. Because we caught it early, he received timely medical care and is living well today. How many others might be walking around with undetected conditions?
